After more than 20 years of working with dogs and their people, a short testimonial page was never really going to happen.
The testimonials below come from clients I have worked with over the years, from healthy puppies and performance dogs to seniors and dogs with complicated medical histories. Some have been lightly trimmed for length and clarity, and a few survey responses have been combined where they tell the same story. The clients’ language, experiences, and opinions remain their own.
Where a BDC case note appears, it adds later follow-up information or useful context that is not already stated in the testimonial.

Chronic colitis, poor appetite and a very unhappy eater
I first heard about Sabine from a fellow dog trainer who had a consultation done and had marvellous results. Parker, my 11-year-old GSD/Husky, had always had a sensitive stomach, colitis and really hated kibble. I felt increasingly stressed because he would skip his meals for two days at a time and seemingly only eat to sustain life.
I contacted Sabine and not long after, I received a full report for a diet that suited his age, activity level and special needs. We gave it a shot.

My first experience with Sabine was when my Jack Russell Terrier was diagnosed with Stage 3 kidney disease. Despite the daunting prognosis of 6–12 months, Sabine reassured me that she could help. Glomerulonephritis with documented laboratory follow-up
My dog, Rudy, an 8½-year-old 103 lb German Shepherd mix, was diagnosed with glomerulonephritis. His vet and a kidney specialist hoped to get his UP/C down with medicine and diet. We were shooting for a 25%, maybe 50% reduction, if we were lucky.
In comes Sabine, who patiently worked with me through my hysteria. Thank you, Sabine!
Three weeks into his home-cooked diet, Rudy’s UP/C not only went down, it went down 83%! His BUN went from 25 to 8, and his creatinine from 1.4 to 1.2. He even gained weight.
I am by no means one of those people who gets any joy out of cooking. If you are concerned with the time factor of home cooking, FEAR NOT. Now that I have a routine, I can whip up a week’s batch by doing a half hour one night, less than an hour the next day. Most of that time is down time as well. I clean the house while the food is cooking. Bonus!

I was lucky that my Boxer was a happy, healthy, active dog before I spoke to Sabine. However, HE was lucky after I sent for a food consultation.

Food allergies, elimination diet, oxalate crystals and long-term follow-up
I came to Sabine because my dog, a young Standard Poodle, had demonstrated a serious food allergy manifesting in dangerous infections in her ears, and she was now reacting negatively to the prescription commercial diet our vet recommended. The vet suggested I learn about canine diets and prepare food for my dog myself.
Although I was very anxious that any new food we tried would trigger an allergic reaction, and although I had a million questions and a slow learning curve, Sabine was a steady, patient and positive collaborator. She led us through a long elimination diet and the unexpected appearance of oxalate crystals in my dog’s urine, providing in-depth information at every step.
When we encountered some surprises in my dog’s intolerance of a few ingredients, Sabine always had a variety of options for different and equally nutritious ingredients. She considered cost, preparation efficiency and taste in presenting the choices.
With her guidance and knowledge, we now have a balanced, nutritious, safe diet of fresh ingredients that my dog LOVES. Her frequent diarrhea and ear infections have been eliminated, her weight has steadied, her coat is soft and pliable, and she loves each meal, never walks away.
Sabine created a companion diet for my smaller, very healthy mixed-breed dog. Both dogs now get home-prepared food, are happy and thriving. The vet supports all the changes, and the vet checkups document their consistent good health.

Seizure disorder
At around one year old, Brawt had his first seizure. We continued down the path of “random” seizures, with no more than two a year until he was three years old.
As time went on, his seizures became worse in both severity and length. At this point Brawt’s seizures had taken a turn for the worse and the frequency had increased to 10–12 a year, lasting anywhere from 8–12 minutes.
In April of 2010, Sabine formulated a diet for Brawt, and as of April 2012, Brawt has been seizure-free for two years. He loves his meals, and they’ve kept him in ideal shape.
Sabine doesn’t just create a “plan” or “diet” for your dog, she pours her heart into what she does. This isn’t a job, it’s a passion. You aren’t just a client, you are a friend.

After having gone to Better Dog Care’s website and reading all the research Sabine has put into her program of healthy eating for your pet, I decided to engage her services and, honestly, I could not be happier.

I was a total newbie at preparing home-cooked food and she made it easy and rewarding!
Dougal has a healthy, lean body weight, and once we had made the diet a couple of times, it was easier and less expensive than the fancy kibble we had been feeding him. I have all the items on hand, so there is no mad rush to order his food.

Bladder stones and post-surgical nutritional management
My dog had stones and surgery to remove them, and I was looking at a vet-recommended prescription diet for the rest of her life. I wanted to feed real food, but I had no idea how to balance meals while also preventing stones from occurring again.
Sabine has studied pet nutrition and has extensive practice creating menus for dogs, including dogs with special nutrition needs such as stones. Being able to turn to someone with the knowledge I did not have was very comforting.
Not only did Sabine prepare a meal plan for my dog according to my dog’s specific needs and medical history, she also taught me how to prepare the food in an efficient way. Preparing food for my dog does take extra time, but with Sabine’s advice it became much easier to fit into my busy schedule.
When we switched to the new meals, my dog showed immediate improvement. Her energy level tripled, she was no longer a picky eater, and her skin and coat showed improvement.

When Gomez had a mast cell tumor, Sabine quickly reformulated his diet to meet his modified diet needs. I don’t know what we would do without Sabine’s advice, responsiveness and patience with all of my questions.

Complex customization, NRC-based feeding and more than a decade of follow-up
My five-year-old Border Collie, Emma, had been eating a home-cooked diet based on NRC recommended nutrient levels since she was a puppy and had been doing quite well on it, but even so, I felt that her diet could be improved further.
I wanted to transition to a partially raw diet, provide more variety, and incorporate Traditional Chinese Medicine principles as well as make adjustments based on results of a NutriScan food intolerance test and a hair mineral analysis test, all while still adhering to NRC guidelines. A tall order!
I contacted Sabine Contreras to see if she would be willing to work with me, and she ably took on the task. She was able to synthesize all the information I sent her, including voluminous answers to her very comprehensive questionnaires, TCM food therapy charts and many pages of test results, and formulate a diet that met all my requirements and more.
Emma is now thriving on her new diet and enjoying her meals immensely. She looks vibrant and full of energy, with a beautiful coat, and her latest blood work was perfect.
Sabine was professional, accommodating and easy to communicate with throughout the diet formulation process and during our follow-up support period, always quick to respond to questions and clear in her explanations.

Ingredient tolerance and digestive upset
I just wanted to let you know that Kai is now doing great with all the ingredients in the diet. He seems to really love it.
I switched him to the new diet cold turkey and he hasn’t vomited or had diarrhea. I definitely can’t say the same for any kibble we’ve ever had him on, even when we switched gradually.

Liver disease, congenital liver shunt and bladder stones
Cooper is a 5-year-old Dachshund that I pulled from the San Diego Central Animal Shelter. He was scared, skinny, had rotten teeth, an ear infection, bladder infection, and the glands in his neck were the size of large almonds.
During a dental procedure, it was discovered that Cooper had serious liver disease and damage. I asked Sabine for her help.
Cooper was doing fabulous with his new home-cooked meals, and through blood work it was revealed that his high liver enzymes had decreased by half in just eight weeks.
We hit a bump in the road in April, when large stones were discovered in Cooper’s bladder. Sabine came up with a new meal plan to address his liver needs and the situation with the stones until he could have them surgically removed.
In May, Cooper had major surgery to remove the bladder stones and explore the liver. Much to the surgeon’s surprise, he found a large congenital liver shunt, which he repaired.
In July, Cooper had his first post-op blood panel, and all counts were within normal range. The surgeon announced, “Congratulations, you have a whole new normal dog.”
The surgeon had a copy of Sabine’s meal plan in his file and asked how long I had been cooking the special meals for Cooper.
Sabine, I am eternally grateful for not only your wisdom and passion, but your compassion when I felt so helpless. Thank you.
BDC case note: Cooper’s nutritional plan had to be revised when bladder stones were discovered while his liver disease was already being managed. His surgeon retained a copy of the BDC formulation in Cooper’s medical file.

Chronic diarrhea while the underlying GI problem was still being investigated
I was introduced to Sabine by a friend who knew I was going through a rough time with my Golden Retriever puppy. At the time, she was constantly having diarrhea with no signs of parasites, and we couldn’t find anything really wrong.
To say Sabine was helpful is a huge understatement. From the initial consultation to the intake form to the support she provided after I received the recipe, everything was done so professionally. She took into consideration all my concerns, tailored the recipe to exactly what I was looking for, and took the time to answer all my questions and explain in detail the reasoning behind her answers and decisions.
I saw a huge improvement in my dog’s stools after starting the new recipe. The recipe didn’t “cure” her 100%, but that is of no fault of Sabine’s. I later found out the cause of her GI issues, and the change in food alone would never have been able to fix it.
She went from having diarrhea almost every other day, to the point where we couldn’t sleep through the night without worrying about an episode, to once every two weeks. It was a huge improvement and allowed me to stress a little less while I looked for the underlying cause of her GI issues with my vet.

Liver dysplasia and nearly 15 years of nutritional support
Working with Sabine has been fantastic! I have a Chihuahua named Lola who was diagnosed with a mild case of liver dysplasia at an early age.
I worked with Sabine over the course of six weeks and had two formulations done. Sabine sent me questionnaires to fill out with extensive information about Lola so that she was able to formulate food that fit all the requirements she needed, having liver dysplasia as well as being balanced for her age and size.
At first the thought of cooking my dog’s food was a little bizarre, as I don’t even cook for myself. But the way Sabine lays out the menus, it was very simple. We played around with the formulas a bit as Lola is a picky eater, and finally we found one that worked!
Every time it gets easier to prepare and cook. Lola licks her bowl clean every meal, and her coat has never been shinier. It is a comforting thought knowing exactly what’s in her food.
I honestly can’t say enough about the services Sabine offers and the prompt personal attention she gives to her clients. There wasn’t one email I sent that went unanswered with words of advice and how-to’s during my support period.

I have worked with Sabine for the last 4½ years for my Chihuahua Lola. We started down that path and haven’t looked back. Four and a half years later, Lola’s liver tests have come back normal.
So to answer the question, “Are Sabine’s services worth it?” The answer is absolutely yes. Lola means the world to me, and I am amazed every day how good I feel knowing exactly what goes into her food. She loves it and does amazing on it. How could I ask for anything more?
Lola passed away at 15½ in 2024. You take for granted just how much they are engrained in everything you do. We look at her beds and strollers and toys and just can’t bring myself to put them away. It’s a very lonely feeling right now.
I just know without you and everything you’ve done for us we most likely wouldn’t have made it to 15½, and for that I am forever grateful.

Recurrent bladder stones, crystals and infections
When I rescued Baylee she needed back surgery, followed by bladder problems with stones, resulting in two bladder surgeries. She again started to develop crystals/stones in her bladder and continued to have problems with bladder stones and infections.
I am thrilled to say that Baylee’s last urine showed only 1–2 crystals, whereas prior to her new diet they were anticipating a third bladder surgery to extract the stones.
Baylee loves her new diet and is eating so much better than previously. Before starting her new diet, Baylee was not very active and when we went for a walk, she was not really interested. Now I have to almost run to keep up with her on walks. She is playing with toys and acting more like a puppy, despite her age of 7 years.
Her entire demeanor has improved! When I tell her it’s time for dinner, she runs into the kitchen in anticipation. At first, she did not eat all her veggies, but now she is cleaning her bowl and loving every bite.

Chronic pancreatitis in a 15-year-old dog
Over the past few years, my 15-year-old Coton de Tulear began having repeated, painful bouts with pancreatitis, requiring him to go on a special low-fat diet that clearly had no taste at all. He had no appetite and seemed a bit depressed, not the chirpy, energetic Cecil we knew him to be.
Finally, he was diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis. Then we found Sabine!

Oxalate crystals, proteinuria and changing senior-dog needs
Sabine has been my senior Papillon Skippy’s nutritional consultant for four years, with incredible results.
When we began working with her, my dog had oxalate crystals in his urine. Six months later, on a carefully formulated and home-cooked diet devised by Sabine, all traces of the crystals disappeared and he was doing very well.
She has continued to adjust his diet annually to address liver enzyme and proteinuria issues. My 14-year-old dog has the energy of an 8-year-old, and even the vet can’t believe his chronological age.

Cancer treatment, allergies, GI problems and feeding a 175 lb Mastiff
My poor pup had been through the wringer when I found Sabine. He had just had surgery, horrible allergies, and was on tons of medication.
Brody is an English Mastiff, and I had tried different foods: sensitive stomach, grain-free, single protein, very expensive and some not so expensive. I tried it all and was never happy with his continued stomach issues, his coat, and his allergies.
I stopped counting the amount of hours I spent online and on the phone trying to find a food that met the criteria his oncologist wanted and was something I would feel good feeding him.

Liver disease and thyroid abnormalities
My 9½-year-old Newfoundland Tori had been diagnosed with liver disease. She was very sick. Her thyroid levels were also very low.

Burns had so many health issues, and Sabine worked with us for a few years. She never once made me feel like an idiot because I was so clueless.

Struvite bladder stone, sensitive stomach and colitis
I was at a loss as to what to feed my Cavachon after she was diagnosed with a sterile struvite bladder stone at 13 months. The prescription food dissolved the stone, luckily, but I didn’t want to feed kibble for life.

Kidney disease and reformulation based on follow-up results
When my dog was unexpectedly diagnosed with kidney issues, I was overwhelmed by all the information online about what to feed and what not to feed to give her the best nutrition possible for her condition. The forms I filled out for the consultation were extremely detailed, and the instructions I was given were even more detailed to cover all the information you need, even if you had barely ever stepped foot in a kitchen before.

I show my girl in breed conformation. Naturally we all want a healthy, well-nourished dog, but in conformation you have people judging every physical aspect of your dog. Hip dysplasia, body condition and fresh-food transition
Before getting in touch with Sabine, I was really conflicted about what I was feeding my dog. I’d tried cooking for Luna in the past, but the weekly batch was tedious and took me three to four hours to cook, measure, and portion. I was also constantly nervous that I wasn’t balancing the recipe properly, and all this led me back to feeding kibble. But Lu wasn’t thriving and didn’t enjoy her meals.

Years of digestive discomfort with budget constraints
Annie had a constant tummy ache from the tender age of five months when I adopted her, clear through her age of five years when I finally contacted Sabine. She also had a terrible odor well beyond “doggie.”
I had tried “everything”: different foods, different vets, voodoo (just kidding!), but nothing made Annie feel better.
At one point I thought I was losing her because she would lie around and do nothing, even refusing to lift her head when I called her name.

I contacted Sabine about one of my Havanese, Cash. Cash was gaining so much weight, and I was feeding him less than a 20 lb dog should get, but he was still gaining weight.
More important to me than his weight was that he was always hungry. He would forage in the kitchen for crumbs and whine where we kept the food. My happy-go-lucky clown was miserable and could think of nothing else but food.
The first diet we tried did not work. In fact, Cash gained half a pound in a week on it and seemed even hungrier. But Sabine worked with me to revise it.
Now Cash is no longer hungry, and he has lost more than a pound in just over a month! My vet was also very impressed because this was the first time Cash had ever lost any weight.

Recurrent struvite crystals after bladder-stone surgery
Two months after nearly losing my Pembroke Welsh Corgi following bladder stone surgery, I turned to Sabine for help. Prescription food and medications were not regulating struvite crystals or infection in the urine, and I was worried she would form another stone quickly.
I’m a professional dog trainer and base all of my training on sound scientific principles. I was not comfortable formulating a diet on my own or based on what I read in a book. I needed someone with Sabine’s experience to help guide me.
It took two months to begin to see results in her first urinalysis after the switch. Crystal formation went from a 5 out of 5 to a 1 on the test results. Red blood cells were gone from her urine. No infection was present.
Four months after that, her urinalysis came back completely clean, showing no crystals, white blood cells or red blood cells. She is a happy, healthy Corgi again.
Sabine was wonderful at answering any questions I had regarding the diet or any test results my vet gave me following the switch. My vet was so happy to see that something worked when everything else was failing.

Long-standing digestive problems and a very gradual transition
I have a two-year-old Havanese named Mikey.
Mikey had a history of digestive issues. Regardless of the number of different types of dog food we tried, his stool would range from soft to really soft and then a bout of diarrhea. Nothing seemed to work. Many fecal tests were run and they came back within normal range.

My 10-year-old English Bulldog Brody has sadly suffered from many medical conditions, most recently arthritis and seizures.

Dental health and avoiding unnecessary anesthesia
I have two Papillons, Brando, a 7-year-old male, and Trixie, a 9-year-old female. I brush their teeth regularly but cannot keep them clean, a recurring problem with toy dogs. Periodically I must have their teeth cleaned by the veterinarian.
About six months ago I brought the dogs for a yearly checkup and the vet said that they both needed a cleaning. I dislike having the dogs undergo anesthesia. Brando had a severe reaction last time, so I consulted with Sabine.

Senior dog with arthritis, liver sensitivity and mast-cell-tumor history
I first heard about Sabine and her services when I reached out online to my fellow Cranky Canine classmates. My dog trainer Caryn told me about Sabine and how easy it was not only to work with her, but also to tackle the recipe she creates for you.
I had wanted to switch my senior pet’s diet over to cooked food for quite some time but was lost as to how I would even begin the process. Even though there is lots of information and recipes available online, I wanted to be able to give my pet exactly what she needed for her age and health requirements, which included supplementation.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease in a young Australian Shepherd
In December 2009, I purchased a young Australian Shepherd puppy. It quickly became apparent that something was wrong, and it took two months to get a diagnosis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
Because of my familiarity with the Dog Food Project, I contacted Sabine Contreras.
We progressed along her plan. I did put Rio on the medications the vet recommended. Sabine recommended four supplements. Initially Rio could not tolerate them; his bowel was so damaged.
After three months, Rio hit a turning point. He gained weight and reached a normal weight. He was taking all his supplements. He was flourishing. I was delighted.
In four months, I had a puppy anyone would be hard pressed to see as anything but 100% normal.
IBD can’t be cured, but it can be controlled with diet and medication. I’m convinced Rio will do just fine with Sabine’s plan.

Fresh-food formulation after trying to balance a raw diet independently

Because of her, I know the dogs are eating a balanced, nutritionally complete diet of fresh foods. The peace of mind is worth the cost alone!
But beyond peace of mind, Roscoe’s itchiness and ear issues have been almost totally eliminated, and both Roscoe and Bella’s digestive upsets seem to be things of the past.
I used to have to clean Roscoe’s ears daily with cleanser, sometimes resorting to medicated cleaner from the vet, and now a quick wipe with a cotton pad once a week or so is all he needs. In addition, he hardly ever chews his paws, and Bella has gained needed weight.

Three active Border Collies and a return for more extensive plans

Heart disease, urinary stones and kidney disease in a geriatric dog
When he was 10, Tapi began to experience some age-related problems. He first developed a heart condition which was treatable with medication.
At 15 Tapi developed stones in his urinary tract and had to have surgery. After a few months, urine crystals showed up again.
Tapi then began to lose his appetite and started to look scrawny and thin. So at 19, we decided to switch Tapi to a natural diet. Initially we were afraid to make the switch, mainly because of his failing kidneys.
Luckily, after searching on the internet, we found Sabine Contreras, who formulated a special diet for Tapi.
Sabine was very helpful in explaining all of the supplements, which at first seemed quite bewildering. It was a learning curve for us and one we are glad we made, because Tapi really liked his “real food” and his appetite and weight improved.
Tapi lived to see his 20th birthday on his diet. His kidney function was stable.
Unfortunately, cancer caught up with our beloved Tapi and he passed away in our bed on the morning of August 26, 2009. He was 20 years and 4 months old.

Rescue dog, digestive problems and individualized commercial guidance
We recently adopted a rescue dog, Sydney, after losing our 15½-year-old Lab. In researching dog food and trying to figure out the best diet for our dog, I found your website. I was so confused after reading so many different viewpoints and hearing conflicting opinions.
It has only been a month since I started your recommendations, however your analysis was dead on. I am feeding the dog food you suggested and giving the supplements.

Agility, growth and physical development
I got my pup specifically to play agility. I was prepared to accept not being able to play if he didn’t like the game, but was surprised when he grew 10 inches over the expected adult height for his breed. He is 26 inches at the withers instead of the expected 16.
His development was fast, long and leggy, with poor muscle development that would have left him prone to injury from jumping his jump height.
Working with Sabine has optimized his muscle and bone density, and I have a dog who loves agility as well as one who can play safely without fear of injury.
